SEEDS OF LEARNING:
Food Literacy Progression Competencies

Food literacy encompasses a spectrum of both tacit and procedural knowledge, skills, and attitudes about food. Food literacy increases food self-determination, and enhances health and well-being. Food education builds food literacy. But we need to do more than "get cooking" (though this is important!). We advocate for a more holistic approach that includes the importance of culture, positive food relationships and sustainability, as well as nutrition, and is grounded in child development pedagogy and traditional knowledge.
That’s why we developed the Food Literacy Progression: A Framework of Food Literacy Development for Children and Youth from 2-18 Years. This grew out of our work on Critical Food Literacy Competencies for Young Adults.

The Food Literacy Progression can be used to develop food education programs that build knowledge, attitudes and skills progressively, in school or community-based learning settings.
The Progression can also be used to emphasize the importance and range of food-related capabilities in human development.
The Food Literacy Progression is available as downloadable (printable) or digital (view online) document, and as a poster.
